I don't think it's a secret that Matt's position with his employer was cut in the round of economy layoffs in December. So with each day news releases of layoffs in the Seattle area, fear does start to creep in. He's "beating the streets", working his networks, trying to find employment. It's grim.
While I flip to MSN.com today, the caption "For American workers, January proves cruel", ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28920139 ) titled right about "Homelessnes surges across the US" ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28916152 ). This was not actually the headliners on the website. The headliners? Superbowl of course. Shopping Cart no no's. Dating younger men. Really, what was I thinking, when I expected the state of the failing economy and US citizen homelessness might supercede these blurbs.
Then I glanced to the left. And there was the snippet on whether Jen & John were kaputs again. Crud, where are MY priorities? I need to get with the program!

I gather there's a lot of disagreement about just how bad this economy actually is. Some are saying it's never been this bad, others are reminding us that in the mid-80s the GDP fell over 6% and the biggest drop in GDP we've seen thus far is around 1%.
I think that although the economy may seem worse to those of us who have been affected more directly, I do think it's good to keep some perspective here. And by the way, I may not have been affected as directly as Matt, but I've felt the slow-down in a big way, I assure you.
This may seem a bit pessimistic, but sometimes I'm surprised the economy is clicking along as well as it is. I fear that if we think it's bad now, we may wish for an economy this good in the not-too-distant future.
Socialism is not going to do our economy any favors and the way our government just continues to hand out dollars (as though it has any dollars to hand out) to private business is frightening. I voted for Bush twice…but he's a far cry from the conservative ideal I might have preferred. I sure as heck didn't vote for Obama. But I'll try not to complain about that too much because I'm afraid McCain wouldn't have been much better. Maybe a little, but not much.
So I dunno what the answer is… well, yes I do. Remember who's really in control of history.
The battle is the Lord's.
And by the way… I didn't care about John and Jen when the economy was GOOD!!
