Why children don't tell

This was my response to Dave Ross making a direct connection to sexually abused kids and it pointing to something wrong at home, because kids don't go & tell their parents what's going on.

The guy was preying on children at an age that weren't quite aware of sexuality and what that all entails. If you have any knowledge of sexual predator behavior, they are very sly. This guy was typical. Centered himself with kids, parents automatically "trusted" him with their kids because of the U, the program, his fame. Abuse, sexual abuse especially, is often connected with shame. These boys were at an age where either they didn't have a clue about sexuality yet (7/8) or they were JUST entering the age of perhaps, someone might have started to explain (10 years old, just entering that realm). The two eye witness sexual episodes were with 10 year old. The older kids seemed to have more of an idea what he was doing and they did extricate themselves from him and the program. I think he picked this age group because of their non understanding of what that was all about. Kids, from all sorts of homes, keep stuff from their parents. Especially if they feel like they've done something wrong. Sexual abuse victims live with shame their entire lives sometimes and often hide the event(s) for years. Good parents or not, abuse happens.

However Dave, I do agree with you that way too many fathers are abandoning their children & their responsibilities. This program was for at risk kids and probably, several sons of single mothers, who put them in this very prestigious program with well known famous coaches because they recognized their sons needed a male figure - and they probably felt lucky, blessed to have their son there. However it's wrong to make an absolute statement that any child who doesn't come forward doesn't have something solid at home. Look at the Catholic church - how many of those boys hid what was happening and probably had very devout fathers at home.

This story sickens me, not only because of the vileness of what happened, but because what does it do for all the kids out there that do have a need? How does a parent feel safe enough to send their kid to any program, religious, not religious and know their kid is okay? How many years did the church cover up their story? And look how many years this guy was allowed to continue harming & having contact with kids - both situation because of power. Unfortunately as a parent, it strips your ability to trust anyone that might be nice to your kid and as an adult, makes you shy away from volunteering in a program and/or being nice to a kid.

Oh NO! Not the Mountain Dew!!!

This is for all my Mt. Dew loving, drinking, injecting (not really pa) high school buddies. And, crap. 18 minutes of jogging for one can of soda? You're kidding me! I'd better make it a Mt. Dew then so I can have enough of a high/jolt/rush that I can triple my run.

That soda tax didn't last long

Wednesday's commentary:

I heard this shocking statistic on CNN:

"A can of pop, soda, whatever you want to call it; it takes the average woman 18 minutes to jog off a can of soda."

Which is why, briefly, there was some talk in Congress of a soda tax to raise money to pay for health care reform.

But it was instantly shot down for the usual reasons. Today a soda tax, tomorrow it’s a user fee on Corn Dogs.

How long before Mountain Dew is a felony? What happens when sugar-deprived teens start injecting themselves with smuggled high fructose corn syrup?

The soft drink industry even ran an ad showing a family camping in the woods and enjoying delicious sugary beverages – to point out that if you tax soda, you might as well close the national parks.

Yes, I’m exaggerating.

So the soda tax, once again, is going nowhere, because the right to cheap soda is sacred, but the obesity studies keep coming. Over 26% of adults are now obese, and their health problems cost $147 billion a year, double what it was ten years ago. And as usual it’s worse for African American women, Hispanics, Native Americans, and poor people.

Bringing us to the ultimate argument – as a piece in the Wall Street Journal pointed out, a soda tax would hurt the poor. Because the poor, apparently really enjoy soda.

Well if that that’s the argument, why do we have a food stamp program forcing so much free food on them? Of course they can’t jog; we’re making it so they can’t even move.

South Carolina Gov Mark Sanford publicly declared his Argentine mistress his soul mate yesterday, and ALSO admitted that he (QUOTE) crossed lines with a handful of other women during 20 years of marriage, though he wouldn't specify what lines.

But he does remain an anti-stimulus fiscal conservative, and he will try to save his career. (*) And why not -- as we all know, behind every successful man, there's a good woman, or maybe several.

I listened to the confession live yesterday. Sickened. Disheartened. Disheartened that I continue to have faith in these people. And yet, my profile says - I dislike politicians. I dislike dishonest people. Well it's not a wonder why over the past few weeks. I didn't get time to publish my blog I was working on and this is from KIRO FM, Dave Ross and I like his points. My favorite word over the years in the midst of stupidity - look of shock on my face, eyes blank - Unbelievable.

Now THAT was a press conference from the Twilight zone.

I realize I should have more sympathy for Governor Mark Sanford, just as I probably should have had more sympathy for Senator John Ensign, and even Newt Gingrich, but I don't.

Merely entering public life demands a huge sacrifice from your family. To then COMPOUND that by betraying your wife requires a level of narcissism that you'd think even a politician would be incapable of.

But beyond that - for a governor to DISAPPEAR for four days in order to nurse his angst? And lie about it? Too bad he wasn't under oath.

And during his press conference he felt compelled to tell the story of the affair - how it began innocently, how it was such a special friendship, how in fact he was trying to get her to reconcile with her husband… PLEASE!

You're the governor of a state in a country on the verge of DEPRESSION! How do you justify devoting even a second of your life to relationship counseling?

I'm beginning to think that all this Glenn Beck teary-eyed flag-waving populism has attracted far too many emotionally overwrought personalities to public office.

Obviously politicians are human, and humans stray, but if a politician is going to cheat, he ought to do it with enough skill that the rest of us don't end up having to watch. That was Clinton's problem too. The difference between Sanford and Clinton is that Sanford is trying to tell us his relationship was genuine and beautiful--, albeit ultimately tragic. At least Clinton knew full well he was just another Bubba.
